Route 38 Knaresborough, Wetherby, Spofforth
Distance: 34 km / 21 miles

Mainly flat ride with few hills.

On leaving the Hornbeam Estate turn right at the t/lights and head for Knaresborough. Follow the road along Hookstone Chase and Forest Moor Road, turning left at the Union PH in Calcutt, dropping down to the River Nidd and the Mother Shipton PH. Cross the River Bridge and turn right on Abbey Road. Delightful riverside ride.

After 1.5miles turn right on the B6164 Wetherby Road, crossing over Grimbald Bridge and passing Macdonald’s, 2 roundabouts and follow signs straight on to Wetherby (6miles), passing through Little Ribston and Kirk Deighton villages.

Approaching Wetherby centre there is a large filling station on your left. Just before this filling station on the right is a sign to the cycleway for Spofforth (called the Harland Way). Follow this and fork right after a few hundred yards (the signs get knocked about a bit) and then it is a straight flat traffic free ride to Spofforth for 2.5miles. In Spofforth village you will come to a T jn meeting the A661. Turn right and at the castle PH go straight on at the mini-roundabout taking the road for Follifoot.

After a short way you go past Spofforth Castle (no entry charge and worth a stop). Continue out of Spofforth and fork right for Follifoot. Follow the road for 2 miles to Follifoot and climb up through the village with 2 nice pubs (if open). At the top of the village in front of the imposing gates turn left. Continue for 0.3miles and where road goes right to the busy by-pass ignore that and go st on following old quiet road. This leads to a footpath (barrier is OK for bikes but tandems need lifting over) with an easy crossing of the A658.

Cross over the road and follow Rudding Lane for 1.5 miles until it meets A661 Wetherby Road. Turn left, up to Woodlands PH, left to return to Hornbeam Park.
