WHEEL EASY – HIGHLIGHTS 2008/09 - Another Great Year!

MEMBERSHIP
• Now 210 Members
• Wheel Easy now a CTC Affiliated Group

RIDES
• Wheel Easy members have been out riding every Sunday since the club was formed in May 2006, and despite an extremely icy winter last year (thanks to all the Ride Leaders).
• Sundays mornings often see a gathering of more than 40-50 riders
• Short, Medium, and Long rides, and the newly introduced Medium Plus ride, are available every Sunday.
• Off road rides have become an occasional feature of our ride calendar. They are well supported.
• EG’s ride every Wednesday morning from Low Bridge, Knaresborough.
• Poddler’s Ride and the newly introduced Medium/Long Ride every Wednesday morning from Hornbeam.
• The Fabulous Five Ride Series was successful in encouraging short and medium riders to try something different and a little more challenging.
• The Magnificent Seven Ride Series of longer and more challenging rides was well attended.
• Several riders completed more than 100 miles joining in the Ripon Loiterers 100 mile ride.
• One ride was up Park Rash and most managed to ride up the infamous 1 in 4 hill out of Kettlewell.
• WALK EASY (yes walks!!) - The severe winter provided an opportunity for those who did not want frozen toes to enjoy a few Wheel Easy Walks including using the 36 bus to Harewood to enjoy the Harewood House Estate walk.

CELEBRATIONS
• A welcome increase in the number of women cycling with Wheel Easy
• We have exceeded 200 members – a 40% increase on last year’s membership
• 54 members and friends/family attended the Xmas lunch.
• We raised £550 at the Wheel Easy Ceilidh for the Bilton-Ripley Route
• We donated £200 to Open Country to recognise their support for Wheel Easy, and we donated £25 to St Michaels Hospice.
• Sky Sports joined us for a filming and interview session in October. We are looking forward to seeing the programme once we get a copy.

IMPROVING THE CYCLING EXPERIENCE
• Our cycling shirts are becoming a common sight on the roads of North Yorkshire (and sometimes even in the Cevennes). This helps our image and encourages others to join us.
• We supported both the Acorn Ride and the Great Yorkshire Bike Ride with notably large contingents in Wheel Easy shirts
• We are Members of Harrogate Cycle Group and the Council Cycling Consultation Group.
• Membership of Harrogate Car Free Day Committee with support and hard work from Wheel Easy membership.
• Many Wheel Easy members are also members and supporters of Sustrans who have:
* Continued working with Sustrans on the planned new Coast to Coast Route - Morecambe to Bridlington via Harrogate.
* Completed 600 hours of voluntary work on local cycle routes
* Won 2 “BAFTERS” - the HBC scheme for environmental awards
* Won 40 tonnes of “hardcore” which, after some negotiation has resulted in a new cycling route to Rudding Lane across the Showground (not open just yet).
• As a result of this hard work our local Sustrans leader, Gia, was asked to speak at the Edinburgh Sustrans Conference and we have featured on the front page of the Regional Newsletter.
